FAQ
INTRODUCTION
Welcome to the page for my Post-Apocalyptic Future-Past CRPG epic ABADDON. By Future-Past, a succint definition invented by my brother, I mean a future where technology has regressed back to the stage of most Fantasy worlds, instead of magic you have high technology. This setting has been explored in Tabletop RPGs, Gamma World being the most famous, Cartoons, Thundarr the Barbarian, Books, such as "A Canticle for Liebowitz" and "The Roadmakers", Movies "Planet of the Apes", "A Boy and His Dog", "Logan's Run", and to a certain extent, the "Mad Max" movies, CRPGs "Fallout" and "Wasteland", and my personal favorite, Anime "Akira" and "Battle Angel Alita".
BEAUTY
I think the beauty of these settings lies in seeing the ruins of society and technology being squandered by primitives (As in Planet of the Apes and Logan's Run, where we see a destroyed New York and Washington D.C., respectively). My main inspiration would be the tabletop RPG Gamma World, the excellent CRPG Wasteland, and the amazing Anime of Battle Angel Alita and Akira. Abaddon is my attempt to capture what made these games so unique and the fun of plowing through the ruins of the ancients with a chainsword in one hand and a garbage can lid as a shield in the other :)
Q: Help! I cant get it to start!
Well, first make sure you have DirectX, even then, the classic version might not work in full screen mode on some comps (hit alt-enter to go to windowed mode), and finally make sure you got Win95/98 ;)
Q: How many classes are there going to be?
When I implement character creation (Which will be VERY soon), there will be TWENTY different character classes NINE different statistics (each offering varying amounts of roleplaying effects on the game), and OVER A HUNDRED different skills (each vastly affecting the game play).
Q: What do you mean stats/skills affecting game play?
Well, basically every NPCs reaction is based off of your stats/skills (i.e. females react better to a character w/ high Charisma scores) Every skill will open up multiple different side quests, the game will never play the same twice!.
Q: What language is Abaddon programmed in?
C++ using the Direct X 9.0 SDK.
Q: How many people are working on Abaddon?
Basically myself, Ive done all the coding and all the artwork on the web page and the game.
Q: How long have you been working on Abaddon?
Well, in its first incarnation (As Champions of the Apocalypse), started way back in 92' I guess, in BASIC! Since then, everytime I learn a new language I start a new Abaddon.
Q: So what is Abaddon inspired by?
Well, as I mentioned before, I used Wasteland as my main inspiration, with Gamma World a close second, also amazing anime like Akira and Battle Angel Alita has also inspired me. But my main inspiration would have to be my constant fascination with sci-fantasy (i.e. futuristic medieval worlds), the idea of humanity being blown back to the stone age by its own stupidity (we are pretty dumb, admit it!)
Q: Any advice for a budding game programmer/designer?
Well, its a LOT of work, mostly coding. But ya gotta do it, and if you are lucky, and you stick with it, you can get something you are proud of!
Q: Are you gonna have magic in Abaddon?
Well, not really, not that it would be difficult to implement, it would be insanely easy to add, which makes me so tempted to do it (and now I understand why every RPG has magic, ITS SO EASY!!). But I will not, I want Abaddon to be different, not just a cookie cutter clone RPG like most of those out there, ABADDON is taking you to an actually realistically plausible place, the futuristic technology may seem like magic, but it isn't. I think the abuse of magic as a crutch makes it so , well, unmagical, it loses all its otherworldly appeal. I would rather go with Stephen King's brand of magic, no main character has it, it is something that mystifies, not just a tool to be used.
Q: Can I help?
Not really...I don't really need any help right now, the biggest thing you can do to help is by spreading the word about Abaddon, adding links to my page, and just telling your friends about the awesome game that is Abaddon!
Q: I wrote you an email, but you didn't write back!
Yeah, Uh..Umm...Sorry :( I am really busy, I try to respond to most of my emails, but sometimes I get a bit overwhelmed, as I work my way through the bulk of my emails I will eventually get to yours!
